About the event
Each piece of clothing has a unique story to tell; a story of its maker; an account of the craftsmen, a story of the workshop; the studio; and many more stories that get lost in the process of making clothing as a work of art. Our film is here to capture and encapsulate these stories as we dwell on the different socio-cultural ethos surrounding this space. From flashy and ostentatious studios of Khan Market and Mehrauli to independent women making a name for themselves in small societies, to the age-old Karkhanas of Delhi-6, to even ground-floor factories run by small families; our work is a portrait of these houses of fashion sustained by people coming from variegated backgrounds. Each house has a different story to tell, each artisan has a different story, and each designer has a different story. With our project, we aim to bring forward these stories in a structured manner, as they have been least covered and poorly marketed. While this industry is portrayed with all its glitz and glamour, our project unravels a few more aspects that are a part of the process. A balance between covering the art and the artist has been made in the film. A unique aspect of our film is how we trace the histories of these artisans working in this industry. In an attempt to portray the socio-cultural aspect, there are numerous interviews with artisans who share their life stories, giving the viewer a deep insight that also might sensitize people in various aspects. While the voice of artisans has been amplified, the film also offers the voice of independent creatives running studios in the high-rent localities of Delhi, and also independent women running small studious working in residential areas with their single-unit workshops. The film will explore various underlying themes that will offer fresh insights to the viewer; as we unravel a side that has been least explored. Clips from design studios and workshops will also be shown in the film which will offer the viewer an insight into the intricate spaces that make up this world of couture.
About the Filmmakers:
Arya has been working as a creative individual for the past 4 years and has ventured into various art fields with the help of the niche audience that he has created. His journey in the field of art started during his school days when he was approached by the Times Group to be a young voice on their 9 pm prime time debates. During his small stint with the Times Group, he worked with the popular journalist Faye D Souza. Soon after in April 2018, Arya started PublicTunes Media, which is today an open resource promoting the heritage, culture, and arts of India. PublicTunes Media also made attempts to create a community of artists who would work together to carve cultural events. He was successfully able to do so and partnered with leading brands to create cultural events in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Bombay. In 2021, he entered the print media industry by launching Insaniyat Magazine; A journal to promote the heritage and arts of India. Insaniyat Magazine’s launch gave Arya and PublicTunes Media a come up and with this enterprise, he was able to create a niche audience to support his work. Insaniyat Magazine gained support not only from students and researchers but also from editors, artists, chefs, columnists, musicians, and many well-known creative individuals. His audience base is students, and young fellows like himself, who are ready to invest in art and towards a better life. Along with the student base, his audience also includes well-known artists who have promoted his work throughout. Arya’s work has the underlying theme of society and culture, and his work captures the socio-cultural image of the people and places he is covering. His new venture is this film, where he has collaborated with Delhi-based Digital Artist and Photographer, Tanya. One would describe Tanya as a well-rounded artist. Her central theme involves working around Fashion and Pride. She is primarily a digital artist and a photographer and has worked immensely with academic societies. Within the academic circles, she is well known for her play with colors and how she infuses different colors and lights to create art. Tanya is currently a resident artist with PublicTunes Media. She joined PublicTunes Media earlier this year to work on the photography unit of Insaniyat Magazine. The photographs of the second issue of Insaniyat Magazine were entirely her work where she exposed herself to street photography. She also serves as the Marketing Head of the fine arts society of SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi University. Within the society, she is well known as the master of lilac, as Tanya’s color scheme mostly involves lilac. Tanya has been successfully able to exhibit her work across various offline and online exhibitions, and her artwork has attracted quite a few collectors, who have invested in her art pieces. Her work has underlying themes of romance, dark aesthetics, and feminism. One could get the feel of 20th-century British literature by observing her artwork. In late 2021, she started to dwell on heritage and started digitally documenting a series of monuments across the national capital.
